Loading a horse

One of the things that I never wanted to learn in life was how to load a horse into a horse trailer. It just seems like a sketchy thing to do. Equines are big and heavy – even the tiny ones. Humans are small and squeaky – even the tallest ones. It’s counterintuitive for something small and squeaky to squeeze into a hard little box with something big and heavy .

But, as it turns out, if you own a horse and need to move it, you need to get the horse into a trailer. If you don’t load a horse into a horse trailer, they don’t go very far very quickly. Which can be a problem in wildfire season.

In the course of this Spring’s adventure of finding a new boarding spot for Dagrenning, I have had to learn how to load a horse by loading Dagrenning – the easiest horse. Aside from water and fly spray she’s a delightfully trusting big heavy thing. We really haven’t had an issue.

Even so, Dagrenning’s home is downwind from this year’s Lower Sugar Loaf fire and the property owner has been put on a level 3 evacuation notice. Right now it’s calm and still. Rain is predicted for later in the week. But wildfire is a thing – which means loading a horse in a trailer under duress is a possibility.

  1. Hate. Doing. Things. Under. Duress. (a lot)
